Bunker Services

A bunker survey (BQS) is a procedure that determines the amount of fuel or diesel a ship receives during bunkering operations. The purpose of a BQS is to ensure the ship receives the full amount of fuel or diesel, and it can serve as documentation of the actual quantities received. BQSs can also be used to support claims or disputes about shortages.
Our team at APNA carries our following types of bunker surveys:

  • Bunker quantity surveys (BQS)
Determines the exact amount of sludge discharged from a vessel to a bunker tanker or truck. The surveyor measures the sludge-related tanks before and after discharge, and the bunker tanker or truck before and after receiving the sludge.
  • Bunker detective surveys
Also known as 221B surveys, these are performed by marine surveyors on behalf of charterers to find any hidden bunker fuel on board.
  • On/off hire bunker and condition surveys
The surveyor sounds all bunker tanks and corrects the soundings to the vessel’s trim and heel to determine the tank volume. They then apply corrections for temperature and specific gravity to determine the actual quantity of bunkers on board. The surveyor also checks the vessel’s consumption to determine how much bunker will remain on board at delivery or redelivery.
